Hair analysis provides a longer surveillance window for drug use than other methods because hair retains drugs longer (weeks or months, compared with days detectable in blood or urine). Collecting hair specimens also is less invasive than urine or blood sampling. Drawbacks for hair analysis include expense, and environmental contamination of the specimen. Testing is performed for medical-legal purposes.

Amisulpride is a derivative of substituted benzamide and a second generation antipsychotic drug used to treat chronic schizophrenia. Low doses of amisulpride promote neurotransmission by blocking presynaptic dopamine autoreceptors D2 and D3. High doses of amisulpride reduce dopaminergic transmission by binding the postsynaptic dopamine D2 and D3 receptors more favorably in the limbic system. PMID: 11735643Blocking the postsynaptic D2 and D3 receptors in the limbic system is highly prognostic of powerful antipsychotic activity. Some data suggests that amisulpride is also effective in patients with dysthymia.
