Detection of targeted nucleic acid sequences in the parainfluenza virus 3 nucleoprotein (NP) gene by PCR-based methods. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Verigene® Respiratory Pathogens Flex Nucleic Acid Test (RP Flex), a multiplexed, qualitative test for the detection and identification of multiple viral and bacterial genetic virulence markers from nasopharyngeal swab specimens.

Human parainfluenza viruses (hPIVs) are a group of four distinct serotypes of enveloped single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the paramyxovirus family. The hPIV genome contains the following six gene segments: hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN), fusion protein (F), matrix protein (M), nucleoprotein (NP), phosphoprotein (P), and large/polymerase protein (L) genes.
