This term is used to report the presence or absence of Cryptococcus species DNA that encodes ribosomal RNA by PCR. The assay can detect but not differentiate between cryptococcal species including Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. Specimens may include CSF, blood, various body fluids, and bronchial aspirate samples.

Cryptococcus species are encapsulated yeast that cause cryptococcosis, an opportunistic infection that primary affects patients who are immunocompromised. Manifestations of Cryptococcus infection include meningitis and pulmonary cryptococcosis. Analysis of the DNA encoding the ribosomal RNA, sometimes referred to as rDNA, can differentiate among pathogenic yeast, such as Candida and Cryptococcus, and can also be used to identify specific species, such as Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii, depending on the specific region that is targeted.
