Term Description

The physical subscore reported as part of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (R) Questionnaire is calculated by adding the numeric responses to 8 specific self-assessments regarding whether or not a patient's heart failure prevented them from living as they wanted during the past month (4 weeks) from a physical perspective. The 8 assessments used (by question number in survey) are: 2 - making you sit or lie down to rest during the day; 3- making your walking about or climbing stairs difficult; 4 - making your working around the house or yard difficult; 5 - making your going places away from home difficult; 6 - making your sleeping well at night difficult; 7 - making your relating to or doing things with your friends or family difficult; 12 - making you short of breath and 13 - making you tired, fatigued, or low on energy.

The responses are based on a scale of 0-5 where 0 = No, 1 = Very Little and 5 = Very Much; therefore, the physical subscore is out of a total of 40 points, with a higher score indicating increasing difficulty.
