Qualitative detection of nucleic acid sequences in Candida parapsilosis DNA in positive blood culture specimens by target amplification and non-probe detection methods, such as melt curve analysis. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's test kit, FilmArray Blood Culture Identification panel v2.

Candida parapsilosis is a commensal fungus of human skin and a major cause of infection in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients with serious comorbidities. It is oval, round, or cylindrical in shape, and exists as a yeast or pseudohyphae. Infection with C parapsilosis in humans has increased significantly over the past 10 years, and is especially dangerous to critically ill neonates, that experience more than 25% of all invasive fungal infections in low-birth weight infants in the United Kingdom, and nearly one-third of neonatal Candida bloodstream infections in North America. C parapsilosis is known to be spread by hand contact in the hospital environment, but can also form biofilms on catheters and other implant devices and spread from there.
