Methicillin resistance mecC gene [Presence] by Molecular method
Active
Term Description
Detection of the mecC gene in methicillin-resistant bacteria, specifically methicillin-resistant staphyloccus aureus (MRSA), in various clinical specimens.

Part Description
LP249928-5 Bacterial methicillin resistance mecC gene
The mecC gene, a homologue of mecA, is found in bacterial cells and enable bacteria to be resistant to antibiotics such as oxacillin. The gene is carried on a mobile genetic element called the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which integrates at an open reading frame (orfX) in the bacterial genome. Detection of the gene in clinical specimens suggests the presence of methicillin-resistant bacteria, primarily Staphylococcus aureaus (MRSA). The prevalence of mecC MRSA is currently low but varies geographically where in some regions its presence is increasing. PMID: 24331435
