Part Descriptions
LP263665-4 Complement C7.functional
A 93-kDa serum glycoprotein encoded by C7 gene. It is a polypeptide chain with 28 disulfide bridges. In the formation of membrane attack complex, C7 is the next component to bind the C5b-6 complex forming a trimolecular complex C5b-7. C5b-7 is lipophilic, resembles an integral membrane protein, and serves as an anchor for the late complement components, C8 and C9.

LP263665-4 Complement C7.functional
The complement system is a key part of the immune system and inflammatory response. The system has three pathways: 1) the classic pathway, 2) the alternative pathway, and 3) the lectin activation pathway. Complement C7 is involved in the alternate complement pathway and one of the late activation complement proteins along with C5, C6, C8, and C9. Patients with deficiencies of the late complement proteins are unable to form the membrane attack complex (MAC), the end result of the complement activation cascade. Patients with C7 deficiency have increased susceptibility to neisserial infections and some have developed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), scleroderma, and pyoderma gangrenosum. Complement tests measure either the quantity or the activity (function) of complement proteins. In some cases, complement proteins are present but not functional, in which case a functional assay is used to detect the deficiency.
