Respiratory syncytial virus Ag [Presence] in Lower respiratory specimen by Immunofluorescence
Active
Term Description
Samples that are positive for respiratory syncytial virus display punctate cytoplasmic fluorescence with small inclusions in the syncytia.
Part Description
LP14244-5 Respiratory syncytial virus
Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, causes upper respiratory tract infections and bronchiolitis, an infection of the small airways that can cause wheezing and respiratory distress. Infants, especially those that were born prematurely, are particularly susceptible, and RSV bronchiolitis is a common cause of hospitalization for infants during the winter months. Certain groups of high-risk infants may be given palivizumab, a recombinant monoclonal antibody to RSV, as prophylaxis against RSV infection.
