Arachidonate (AA) is an essential polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that is produced from dietary linoleic acid. AA is located in human fat, liver, brain, and glandular organs and is a mediator of inflammation. The AA within the phospholipids of cell membranes is the surface where the production of a number of biologically active compounds occurs. A few of the compounds produced includes prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes which regulate processes including platelet aggregation, blood clotting, smooth muscle contraction, leukocyte chemotaxis, inflammatory cytokine production, and immune function.[PubChem: 444899] AA is released from the cell membrane when acted upon by phospholipases and then metabolized by cyclooxygenase (COX) producing the prostanoids prostaglandin and thromboxane A2, which can stimulate or mitigate inflammation. PMID: 21508345 One of the benefits of the Omega-3 fatty acids for patients with inflammatory disease is believed to be their selective modification of the metabolism of AA by the omega-3 fatty acids that results in a reduced amount of inflammation. Depending on the number of carbon atoms, the fatty acids are members of one of three groups which includes the short chain fatty acids, the medium chain fatty acids, and the long chain fatty acids. Fatty acids are described by the number of carbon atoms, the number of double bonds, and the position of the double bonds.
