Term Description
The pulmonary embolism severity index (PESI) score is based on 11 prognostic variables, including age, gender, heart rate, pulse oximetry result, and past medical history, that are used to stratify patients into five risk classes (I-V) of increasing probability of mortality. The scores range from 0 to greater than or equal to 125. Scores between 0-65 are grouped into Class I and indicate very low risk, 66-85 (Class II) indicate low risk, 86-105 (Class III) indicate intermediate risk, 106-125 (Class IV) indicate high risk, and >125 (Class V) indicate very high risk. The scores are used to determine whether a patient is a potential candidate for outpatient care or if more intensive treatment and care is needed. PMID: 16020800 PMID: 18989542
