EpCAM, also known as epithelial cell adhesion molecule, is the target of one of the several autoantibodies tested to detect liver cancer in its early stages. EpCAM is a cell surface molecule with a number of different functions including cell adhesion, intracellular signaling, migration, proliferation and differentiation. It is normally expressed in many human tissues, but is overexpressed in some neoplasms, including liver, breast, ovarian and gallbladder cancers. EpCAM facilitates the growth of tumors by switching on the proto-oncogene c-MYC. A poor survival rate is associated with the overexpression of EpCAM in liver cancers.
