Candida guilliermondii is part of a group of phenotypically indistinguishable species of Candida that together are called Candida guilliermondii complex. All of the species are genetically distinct and include Candida guilliermondii, Candida fermentati, Candida carpophila, and Candida xestobiiis. C. guilliermondii complex infections are known to be uncommon, with some studies reporting incidence of candidemia at about 2%, and it is most commonly seen in patients with hematologic malignancies. It has been reported that C. guilliermondii has diminished susceptibility to azoles and echinocandins, although the epidemiologic and clinical information about C. guilliermondii complex infections is limited [PMID:28438935].
