Term Description

Abnormal platelet aggregation results typically are due to a medication effect (eg, aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use) and less commonly reflect an acquired or congenital platelet disorder. If present, acquired conditions include dysproteinemias, myeloproliferative diseases, and renal failure. Congenital conditions include Glanzmann thrombasthenia, Bernard-Soulier syndrome, Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, storage pool disease, and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome.

Platelet aggregation evaluates the functional integrity of platelets. Test agents for stimulation include ADP, collagen, epinephrine, ristocetin, thrombin and arachidonic acid. Different abnormalities are detected by evaluating the response to these stimulators.
