Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria that is a major cause of food poisoning in the United States. The disease results from the ingestion food contaminated with enterotoxin-producing C perfringens, usually C perfringens type A. Incubation time is 8-22 hours after ingestion of contaminated food, and symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, and abdominal pain. Fever, nausea, and vomiting are rare, and the disease lasts about 24 hours. C perfringens has also been sporadically reported in association with necrotizing enteritis.
