Fibroblast growth factor 19
Active
Description
Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF-19), is encoded by the FGF19 gene. It binds to fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 and is involved in adipocyte glucose uptake and the suppression of bile acid biosynthesis. [UniProt: O95750] FGF-19 is fully active in the presence of a cofactor - beta-Klotho protein. FGF-19 is created after every meal and plays a role in increasing glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and decreasing gluconeogenesis. Obesity in adults and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese adolescents is associated with lower levels of FGF-19, while patients on hemodialysis have higher FGF-19 levels compared to the healthy population.
