RSNA and RadLex

Regenstrief Institute and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) have formed a collaborative relationship to unify terms for radiology procedures. The Radiological Society of North America, owns and maintains the RadLex® medical terminology for radiology, and the Regenstrief Institute Inc. owns and maintains the LOINC terminology standard for medical tests and measurements. Creating standardized radiology procedure names will improve the quality, consistency and interoperability of radiology test results in electronic medical record systems and health information exchange. The goal of the project is to produce a single unified source of names and codes for radiology procedures with a cooperative governance process.

Where to find radiology content in LOINC

Radiology content in LOINC can be found within the Loinc.csv file included in the primary LOINC download file. Also in this same download, you can find a directory named LoincRsnaRadiologyPlaybook in AccessoryFiles for specific radiological observations, including associated Parts and mappings to RPIDs.

You can also find terms within the radiology class using SearchLOINC with the query CLASS:RAD. Similarly, you can obtain radiology terms via our APIs including our terminology service using HL7 FHIR.

LOINC Radiology Committee

The LOINC Radiology Committee meets regularly to discuss issues that impact the radiological observables available in the LOINC/RSNA Radiology Playbook.
