Tropical vines on which long, hanging pods enclose several kidney-shaped seeds. The edible, pea-like seeds are creamy in color with a black hilum (the characteristic black spot). The seeds are usually dried and stored before being cooked and eaten. Originally native to Asia, now an important food, forage, and cover crop elsewhere. They are staple part of southern US cooking.
