Part Descriptions
LP34414-0 1,1,2-Trichloroethane
1,1,2-Trichloroethane, or 1,1,2-TCA, is an organochloride solvent with the molecular formula C2H3Cl3. It is a colorless, sweet-smelling liquid that does not dissolve in water, but is soluble in most organic solvents. It is an isomer of 1,1,1-trichloroethane. It is used as a solvent and as an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,1-dichloroethane. 1,1,2-TCA is a central nervous system depressant and inhalation of vapors may cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath, unconsciousness, or cancer. Trichloroethane may be harmful by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. It is a respiratory and eye irritant. Although no definitive studies currently exist, trichlorethane should be treated as a potential carcinogen since laboratory evidence suggests that low molecular weight chlorinated hydrocarbons may be carcinogenic

38290-3 1,4-Dichlorobenzene [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP18237-5 1,4-Dichlorobenzene
1,4-Dichlorobenzene (para-dichlorobenzene, p-DCB, PDB) is an organic compound with the formula C6H4Cl2. This colorless solid has a strong odour. It consists of two chlorine atoms substituted at opposing sites on a benzene ring. p-DCB is used a pesticide and a deodorant, most familiarly in mothballs in which it is a replacement for the more traditional naphthalene. p-DCB is also used as a precursor in the production of the polymer poly(p-phenylene sulfide). The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have determined that p-DCB may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen, although there is no direct evidence. Animals given very high levels in water developed liver and kidney tumors.

Exposure to 9 milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m³) of antimony for a long time can irritate eyes, skin, and lungs. Breathing 2 mg/m³ of antimony for a long time can cause problems with the lungs (pneumoconiosis), heart problems (altered electrocardiograms), stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach ulcers. Other health effects to people who swallow antimony are not known. Whether antimony can cause cancer or birth defects, or affect reproduction in humans is not known. Antimony has been used as a medicine to treat people infected with parasites (leishmaniasis). Patients who have had too much of this medicine, or are sensitive to it, experienced adverse health effects including diarrhea, joint and/or muscle pain, vomiting, problems with the blood (anemia) and heart problems (altered electrocardiograms).

Part Descriptions
LP16802-8 Arsenic
Arsenic (As, CAS No. 7440-38-2) is a metalloid that exists in both inorganic and organic forms in the environment and is classified as a human carcinogen by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and IARC (International Agency for Research in Cancer). Arsenic levels are naturally higher in certain geographical areas, including regions of Asia, China, Chile, Mexico and United States. PMID: 27894683 Exposure to toxic levels of arsenic, mainly via ingestion of As contaminated water and food, occur in these areas as well as near hazardous waste sites or in the workplace. Chronic exposure to low level of arsenic can cause skin lesions (e.g. melanosis, leucomelanosis, and keratosis), neurological effects, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and cancers typically involving the skin, lung, and bladder. PMID: 19190988 High exposure levels to arsenic can cause death.
Veterinary Medicine:
Arsenic is seldom reported since the concentrations normally found in animal feeds are significantly less than the toxic dietary concentration. If arsenic poisoning occurs, signs of intoxication include reduce feed intake and depressed growth. Some animal species can have convulsions and incoordination followed by posterior paresis and quadriplegia, blindness and decreased hemoglobin. In pigs, cases of arsenic poisoning usually arise from the use of organic arsenical growth-promoting feed additives.

9464-9 Barium [Mass/volume] in Water
Term Description
PPM=G/ML*10^6
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP16803-6 Barium
Barium, a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal, reacts with water and carbon dioxide and is not found as a free element. The most common naturally occurring minerals are the very insoluble barium sulfate, BaSO4 (barite), and barium carbonate, BaCO3 (witherite). The metal is used to scavenge air in vacuum tubes, as a component of high-temperature superconductors and electroceramics, and is added to steel and cast iron. Water-soluble barium compounds are poisonous. At low doses, barium ions act as a muscle stimulant, whereas higher doses affect the nervous system, causing cardiac irregularities, tremors, weakness, anxiety, dyspnea and paralysis. Barium ions also target the eyes, immune system, heart, respiratory system, and skin, and may cause blindness and sensitization.

38320-8 Benzo alpha pyrene [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP34412-4 Benzo alpha pyrene
Benzo[a]pyrene, C20H12, is a five-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon whose metabolites are mutagenic and highly carcinogenic. It belongs to a class of polycyclic aromatic compounds known as benzopyrenes, which consist of a benzene ring fused to a pyrene molecule. Benzo[a]pyrene is a product of incomplete combustion at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C. Benzo[a]pyrene was determined in 1933 to be the component of coal tar responsible for the first recognized occupation-associated cancers, the sooty warts (cancers of the scrotum) suffered by chimney sweeps in 18th century England. In the 19th century, high incidences of skin cancers were noted among fuel industry workers. By the early 20th century, the toxicity of benzo[a]pyrene was demonstrated when malignant skin tumors were produced in laboratory animals by repeatedly painting them with coal tar.

LP16805-1 Beryllium
Beryllium (Be) exposure is an industrial hazard for workers in metal extraction, rocket bases, nuclear plants, refining plants, or where coal is burned extensively. Urine excretion is variable and does not correlate with disease. Toxicity from beryllium exposure is latent and chronic inhalation will lead to berylliosis, a chronic allergic-type lung response and chronic lung disease. Beryllium enters the body through the lungs and toxicity has been associated with increased incidence of pulmonary cancers. [Tietz]

38341-4 Chlordane [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP18018-9 Chlordane
Chlordane is a colorless or amber-colored liquid organochlorine insecticide. Because chlordane is a likely human carcinogen, its application to soil in the United States was halted in April, 1988. Chlordane may now be used only to treat fire ants in power transformers. Chlordane is considered moderately to highly toxic when in contact or absorbed by the eyes and skins, inhaled, or ingested. Extreme exposure to chlordane can lead to symptoms of poisoning including nausea, vomiting and gut pain followed by convulsions. Early signs of exposure include agitation or excitation, but may be followed by depression, loss of coordination, fatigue, and confusion. Individuals who are chronically exposed to chlordane may show signs of jaundice. Chlordane damages blood vessels, kidneys and can lead to aplastic anemia and leukemia. Chlordane is highly poisonous to freshwater invertebrates and fish. It does bioaccumulate in bacteria and in marine and freshwater fish. Chlordane is extremely toxic to bees and earthworms. Chlordane is broken down when heated into poisonous gases including phosgene, toxic and corrosive fumes of chlorine, and oxides of carbon. It may remain in contaminated soil for up to 20 years.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/chlordane-ext.html]

LP15483-8 Chloride
Chloride is an essential mineral required by humans that is found mainly in body fluids. It is an important, negatively charged ion in the blood, and a major electrolyte that helps to conduct electrical impulses. Electrolytes including chloride are located in the blood, lymph, and intra- and extra-cellular fluid. Chloride helps to regulate osmolarity by offsetting the positively charged sodium and potassium ions in the serum. It combines with hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid in the digestive tract which breaks down proteins, absorbs metallic minerals, and activates intrinsic factor. Chloride is absorbed both actively and passively in order to help maintain extracellular fluid volume. There is a continuous exchange of chloride and bicarbonate that occurs between the red blood cells and the plasma that controls the pH and excretion of carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration.[https://traceminerals.com/chloride-the-forgotten-essential-mineral/]

LP207910-3 free DRUG/TOX
The measurement of free (unbound) drug concentrations in plasma is important for certain drugs and has two advantages over measurement of total concentration: (1) the free concentration is independent of changes in plasma binding (e.g., due to changes in albumin), and (2) the free concentration is more directly related to both the efficacy and toxicity of the drug PMID: 6636249. For most drugs and the majority of patients, measuring the free and total concentrations is not necessary. However, for certain drugs, including some anticonvulsants and antibiotics, and specific patient populations, such as critically ill or immunosuppressed patients, the free concentration is a better indicator of therapeutic effect and potential toxicity.

Part Descriptions
LP17764-9 Chlorobenzene
Chlorobenzene is an aromatic organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5Cl. This colorless, flammable liquid is a common solvent and a widely used intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals.
Chlorobenzene is not a naturally occurring compound, but because of its manufacture, can persist in soil for several months, in air for about 3.5 days, and in water for less than one day. Humans may be exposed to this agent via breathing contaminated air (primarily via occupational exposure), eating contaminated food or water, or by coming into contact with contaminated soil (typically near hazardous waste sites). it is not considered a widespread environmental contaminant.
Upon entering the body, typically via contaminated air, chlorobenzene is excreted both via the lungs and the urinary system.

Copper analysis is used to diagnose toxicity and metabolism disorders, such as Wilson's disease and Menkes syndrome.
Veterinary Medicine:
Copper sulphate is often added to pig feed to improve weight gain. If the feed is not uniformily mixed, pigs may be exposed to toxic levels of copper. The first indication of toxicity is a rise in blood copper concentration. The primary clinical signs include jaundice, dullness, weakness, anemia, trembling and respiratory distress.

38338-0 Cyanide [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP16815-0 Cyanide
A cyanide is any chemical compound that contains the cyano group -CN, with the carbon atom triple-bonded to the nitrogen atom. The CN group can be found in many kinds of compounds. Some are gases, others are solids or liquids. Some are salt-like, some covalent. Some are molecular, some ionic, and many are polymeric. Those that can release the cyanide ion CNˆ' are highly toxic.
The cyanide anion is an inhibitor of the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase (also known as aa3) in the fourth complex of the electron transport chain (found in the membrane of the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells). It attaches to the iron within this protein. The binding of cyanide to this cytochrome prevents transport of electrons from cytochrome c oxidase to oxygen. As a result, the electron transport chain is disrupted, meaning that the cell can no longer aerobically produce ATP for energy. Tissues that depend highly on aerobic respiration, such as the central nervous system and the heart, are particularly affected. This is an example of histotoxic hypoxia.

38302-6 Endrin [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP14379-9 Endrin
Endrin is a white, solid, nearly odorless chemical that has been used to eradicate insects, rodents, and birds. It has not been available for sale or use or allowed to be manufactured in the United States since 1986. Endrin can be found in low levels in ground and surface water where it is mostly bound to the bottom sediment. It does bioaccumulate in the tissues of aquatic wildlife. Endrin is detectable in soil after application for as long as 10 years.[https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxfaqs/tf.asp?id=616&tid=114] Endrin is toxic if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed by the skin. If burned, endrin can produce toxic hydrogen chloride and phosgene. Symptoms of endrin poisoning include epileptiform convulsions, stupor, headache, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, aggressiveness, confusion, drowsiness, lassitude, and anorexia. Endrin is not classified as a human carcinogen.[PubChem:46174049]

38306-7 Heptachlor [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP17905-8 Heptachlor
Heptachlor is a white to tan, waxy organochlorine that was used to treat termites and other insects. It is toxic to humans and animals, causing irritability, salivation and dizziness when recurrently inhaled or exposed in and around the mouth. Heptachlor production gradually ended in the 1980s, but remains in the soil and in hazardous waste sites. The paramount danger of heptachlor is to the environment since it is slow to decompose and it bioaccumulates in the food chain. Heptachlor is a probable human carcinogen.[PubChem:3589]

9477-1 Lead [Mass/volume] in Water
Term Description
PPM=G/ML*10^6
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP14259-3 Lead
Lead is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death. Routes of exposure include contaminated air, water, soil, food, and consumer products. Occupational exposure is a common cause of lead poisoning in adults. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that more than 3 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to lead in the workplace. One of the largest threats to children is lead paint that exists in many older homes. Blood lead levels screen for lead poisoning and monitor treatment as well. The Centers for Disease Control (US) has set the standard elevated blood lead level for adults to be 10 µg/dl of the whole blood. For children the number is set much lower at 5 µg/dl of blood as of 2012 down from a previous 10 µg/dl. The major treatments are removal of the source of lead and chelation therapy. [Wikipedia: Lead_poisoning] Both capillary and venous blood specimens are used for lead testing and they have different reference ranges, so it is important to distinguish the specimen type for both clinical and public health reporting. Capillary samples are more likely to be contaminated by environmental residues present on the skin. Venous blood collected using evacuated tubes and needles certified as lead-free is preferred (NCCLS.2001), however obtaining venous samples from pediatric patients may be be difficult, capillary blood from a finger puncture may be used for screening purposes. If an elevated lead level is detected in capillary blood, a second test on a venous sample is necessary.

38323-2 Lindane [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP15064-6 Lindane
Lindane is an organchlorine insecticide and fumigant that poisons soil-dwelling and plant-eating insects. The Environmental Protection Agency cancelled the use of lindane in the dairy and agricultural industries and it is no longer produced in the United States. It is currently an ingredient in lotions, creams, and shampoos to eradicate lice and mites in humans. Lindane is highly toxic and symptoms of acute exposure in humans include mental and motor retardation, central nervous system excitation, convulsions, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, dermatitis, loss of balance, grinding of teeth, and hyper-irritability. Lindane is extremely toxic to fish, bees and aquatic invertebrates. It persists in fresh and salt water ecosystems. Lindane enters plants when it is directly applied to them, from contaminated water, and from vapors of lindane.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/lindane-ext.html]

Part Descriptions
LP14344-3 Mercury
Mercury is a naturally occurring metal which has several forms. The metallic mercury is a shiny, silver-white, odorless liquid. If heated, it is a colorless, odorless gas. Mercury combines with other elements, such as chlorine, sulfur, or oxygen, to form inorganic mercury compounds or "salts," which are usually white powders or crystals. Mercury also combines with carbon to make organic mercury compounds. The most common one, methylmercury, is produced mainly by microscopic organisms in the water and soil. More mercury in the environment can increase the amounts of methylmercury that these small organisms make.
Metallic mercury is used to produce chlorine gas and caustic soda, and is also used in thermometers, dental fillings, and batteries. Mercury salts are sometimes used in skin lightening creams and as antiseptic creams and ointments. [CDC: Mercury]

LP14344-3 Mercury
The nervous system is very sensitive to all forms of mercury. Methylmercury and metallic mercury vapors are more harmful than other forms, because more mercury in these forms reaches the brain. Exposure to high levels of metallic, inorganic, or organic mercury can permanently damage the brain, kidneys, and developing fetus. Effects on brain functioning may result in irritability, shyness, tremors, changes in vision or hearing, and memory problems. Short-term exposure to high levels of metallic mercury vapors may cause effects including lung damage, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increases in blood pressure or heart rate, skin rashes, and eye irritation.[CDC: Toxfaqs]

38324-0 Methoxychlor [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP15065-3 Methoxychlor
Methoxychlor is an organochlorine pesticide that has a comparatively low toxicity and transitory persistence in biological systems. Since the ban on Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in 1972, the use of methoxychlor has gone up. Methoxychlor is used as a general purpose pesticide in agriculture, households, on ornamental plants, and to kill parasites on dairy and beef cattle. There is no evidence that methoxychlor damages genetic material or is an animal carcinogen. While methoxychlor does not bioaccumulate in the tissue of mammals, it is very persistent in soil and has a half-live of more than six months.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/methoxychlor-ext.html]

13616-8 Nitrite [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP14270-0 Nitrite
Nitric oxide is converted to nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-), both inorganic ions that occur naturally in the soil, water and some foods. Nitrates are relatively non-toxic but can become toxic when converted to nitrites either in food or in the digestive tract. In animals, pigs are more susceptible to nitrite poisoning than cattle and sheep. PMCID: PMC4170561 Pigs have been poisoned by drinking the condensed water from ventilating shafts in piggeries and after eating plaster board which had fallen into their pens after becoming soaked with this material. Both feed and water consumption need to be considered when encountering nitrate toxicity problems.

38326-5 Pentachlorophenol [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP16831-7 Pentachlorophenol
Pentachlorophenol (C6 HCl5 O) is a synthetic fungicide which is an organochloride. It is toxic to humans. Pentachlorophenol has historically been used as a pesticide and wood preservative. In 1984 (or 1987 references vary), the purchase and use of pentachlorophenol was restricted in the United States, and the general public may no longer buy it. It still has some industrial use as a wood preservative for utility poles, railroad ties, and wharf pilings. Exposures to pentachlorophenol measured in minute quantities has been shown to affect the endocrine system of vertebrate life forms and may lead to immune system disfunction, and disruption of normal sexual, cognitive, physical and emotional development. It has also been linked to trans-generational cancer through disruption of foetal development. Its main action on the cell is to uncouple oxidative phosphorylation and therefore deplete levels of cellular ATP.

LP16831-7 Pentachlorophenol
An insecticide and herbicide that has also been used as a wood preservative. Pentachlorphenol is a widespread environmental pollutant. Both chronic and acute pentachlorophenol poisoning are medical concerns. The range of its biological actions is still being actively explored, but it is clearly a potent enzyme inhibitor and has been used as such as an experimental tool.

38311-7 Thallium [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP16837-4 Thallium
Thallium is the chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Tl and atomic number 81. This soft gray malleable poor metal resembles tin but discolors when exposed to air. Thallium is highly toxic and is used in rat poisons and insecticides but since it might also cause cancer (although the EPA does not class it as carcinogen), this use has been cut back or eliminated in many countries. It is also used in infrared detectors. It has even been used in some murders, even earning the nickname Inheritance powder alongside Arsenic.

LP16837-4 Thallium
Thallium is similar to lead and mercury in terms of its toxic properties. Chronic exposure produces alopecia, peripheral neuopathy, seizures, and renal failure. Acute poisoning results in nausea, vomiting, hematemesis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, coma, and death (in about 10% of patients).

38330-7 Toxaphene [Mass/volume] in Water
Part Descriptions
LP19240-8 Toxaphene
Toxaphene is a mixture of hundreds of different chlorinated camphenes and chlorinated terpenes that result from a reaction between chlorine gas and camphene. Toxaphene can exist as a gas or yellow waxy solid that smells like pine. It is a pesticide used heavily in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States to eliminate insects on cotton and other crops, on livestock, and to kill undesirable fish in lakes. Toxaphene was banned in the United States in 1990. Toxaphene pollutes the air when it evaporates, the soil by clinging to soil fragments, and water contaminated with it that flows into rivers, lakes and ponds. Elevated levels of toxaphene are found in predatory fish and mammals where it collects in fatty tissue. The Environmental Protection Agency has listed toxaphene as a probable human carcinogen.
