82354-2 Human papilloma virus 16 and 18+45 E6+E7 mRNA [Identifier] in Cervix by NAA with probe detection

Term Description

Detects E6/E7 viral messenger RNA (mRNA) of human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16, 18, and 45 in cervical specimens from women with positive HPV assay results. For women 21-years and older with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) cervical cytology results, and HPV positive assay results, this assay can be used to assess the presence or absence of high-risk HPV genotypes 16, 18, and/or 45. For women 30-years and older, the HPV 16, 18, and/or 45 genotype assay can be used to test samples from women with HPV assay positive results, along with cervical cytology results. This assay has not been evaluated for HPV vaccinated patients or in cases of suspected abuse. It differentiates HPV 16 from HPV 18 and/or HPV 45, but does not differentiate HPV 18 and HPV 45. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Aptima HPV 16 18/45 genotype assay which uses target capture, target amplification by transcription-mediated amplification and detection of the amplification products by hybridization protection.

Part Description

LP184364-0   Human papilloma virus 16 & 18+45 E6+E7 mRNA
A group of about 30 HPVs, typically transmitted through sexual contact. Genital HPV infection is very common, with estimates suggesting that up to 75% of women will become infected with one or more of the sexually transmitted HPV types at some point during adulthood (Baseman and Koutsky, 2005). Some sexually transmitted HPVs, such as types 6 and 11, can cause genital warts. However, most HPV types that infect the genitals tend not to cause noticeable symptoms. Persistent infection with a subset of about a dozen so-called high-risk sexually transmitted HPVs, including types 16,18,31, and 33, can lead to the development of anogenital cancers, including cervical, penile and anal. HPV infection is a necessary factor in the development of nearly all cases of cervical cancer (Walboomers 1999). Cervical Pap smear testing is used to detect HPV-induced cellular abnormalities. This allows targeted surgical removal of pre-cancerous lesions prior to the development of invasive cervical cancer. Change Reason
The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
