Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that can cause severe infections in immunosuppressed patients. The its genes are conserved across candida species, but specific internal sequences have enough variation to be able to distinguish amongst species. One such internal its sequence is specific for C albicans, and detecting this gene sequence in a clinical specimen can help identify C albicans as the causative organism in a particular infection.
