HTLV I and II panel - Serum or Plasma by Immunoblot
Active
77744-1 HTLV I and II Ab band pattern [Interpretation] in Serum or Plasma
Term Description
This assay uses antigens that are either recombinant proteins or synthetic peptides selected to detect antibodies with a wide specificity to known isolates of the HTLV strains. Two gag (p19 I/II, p24 I/II) and two env (gp46 I/II, gp21 I/II) bands are used as non-type- specific antigens, to confirm the presence of HTLV I/II antibodies. Type-specific antigens for HTLV-I (gag p19-I, env gp46-I) and for HTLV-II (env gp46-II), distinguish HTLV-I and HTLV-II infections. There are four control lines: one negative control (streptavidin), and three positive control lines. This term was created for the submitter's INNO-LIA HTLV I/II Score, a Line Immune Assay.

Part Descriptions
LP193323-5 HTLV I & II Ab band pattern
HTLV-I and HTLV-II are human retroviruses associated with adult T-cell leukemias and lymphomas and HTLV-associated myelopathy. Patients infected with HTLV-I may remain asymptomatic for up to 20 years, with fewer than 5% of infected patients developing myelopathies or adult T-cell leukemia. Adult T-cell leukemia is associated with skin infiltrates and hypercalcemia. HTLV-I virus is tropic for T4 lymphocytes and is transmitted by sexual contact, blood products, injection drug abuse, maternal-fetal transmission, and by breast milk. HTLV-II has some association with neoplasia involving CD8 T lymphocytes. Information from Jacobs and DeMott Laboratory Test Handbook, 5th edition, DS Jacobs, WR DeMott and DK Oxley, 2001.

LP28552-5 HTLV
HTLV-I is an abbreviation for the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, also called the Adult T-cell lymphoma virus type 1, a virus that has been seriously implicated in several kinds of diseases including HTLV-I-associated myelopathy, Strongyloides stercoralis hyper-infection, and a virus cancer link for leukemia (see adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma). Between one in twenty and one in twenty-five infected persons are thought to develop cancer as a result of the virus.
A closely related virus, HTLV-II shares approximately 70% genomic homology (structural similarity) with HTLV-I.

LP193277-3 Streptavidin
Streptavidin is a protein purified from the bacterium Streptomyces avidinii, with homo-tetramers having an extraordinarily high affinity for biotin.[Wikipedia: Streptavidin] The biological function is unknown. Streptavidin is used extensively in molecular biology and bio-nanotechnology due to the streptavidin-biotin complex's resistance to organic solvents, denaturants, detergents, proteolytic enzymes, and extremes of temperature and pH. The most common uses are the purification or detection of various biomolecules. PMID: 2928324

77745-8 HTLV I p19-I Ab [Presence] in Serum or Plasma by Immunoblot
Part Descriptions
LP193324-3 HTLV I p19-I Ab
