Rhinovirus+Enterovirus RNA [Presence] in Nasopharynx by NAA with non-probe detection
Active
Term Description
Qualitative detection of nucleic acid sequences in rhinovirus and enterovirus RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs by target amplification and non-probe detection methods, such as melt curve analysis. This assay does not distinguish between the two picornaviruses. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's test kit, FilmArray Respiratory Panel (RP) v1.7.

Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) can be categorized into three genetically distinct HRV groups, designated groups A, B, and C, within the genus Enterovirus and the family Picornaviridae. HRVs are positive-sense, single-stranded-RNA (ssRNA) viruses of approximately 7,200 bp. HRVs, which are the cause of more than one-half of cold like illnesses, are commonly associated with upper respiratory tract infection, otitis media, and sinusitis. PCR testing for respiratory virus detection has led to the recognition of HRV as a lower respiratory tract pathogen as well, especially in patients with asthma, infants, elderly patients, and immunocompromised individuals. At this time there are no approved antiviral therapies, and treatment is primarily supportive.

LP35705-0 Rhinovirus+Enterovirus
Enteroviruses are small, non-enveloped, single stranded RNA viruses in the picornavirus family and include coxsackievirus, rhinovirus, echovirus, and poliovirus species. They are the most common viral pathogen worldwide, and clinical manifestations range from mild, cold-like symptoms to severe infections, including encephalitis, aseptic (viral) meningitis, and myocarditis. Enterovirus infection has also been associated with the onset of type I diabetes mellitus. PMID: 23764548
