Part Descriptions
LP248468-3 Bacterial carbapenem resistance blaOXA-48 gene
The OXA-48 gene encodes one of the three primary classes of beta-lactamase produced by Enterobacteriaceae. OXA-48 is mainly harbored in Klebsiella pneumoniae and occurs mainly in North Africa and Turkey. It has been identified in both nosocomial and community-acquired infections. PMID: 24930781 OXA-48 is a member of the OXA group of class D beta-lactamases which includes six subgroups that are able to hydrolyze carbapenem in different degrees and of which OXA-48 is a member. PMID: 24696435 Carbapenems are the most effective treatment against bacteria that produce ESBLs. PMID: 18495062

PCR-based Methods for bacterial susceptibility are similar to genotyping for viral susceptibility, in that resistance or susceptibility is inferred based on the presence or absence of specific genetic information that is known to encode resistance to a specific antibiotic or group of antibiotics. For bacteria, resistance is often conferred by genes that are carried on plasmids, which can be transferred from one species to another. These genes encode proteins that specifically inhibit certain antibiotics, such as carbapenems or aminoglycosides.
