Part Description
LP16737-6 Rabies virus
Rabies virus (RV), is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative sense RNA virus and a member of the Rhabdoviridae family. It is transmitted when an animal infected with RV bites an individual or the saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with an open wound. Once RV penetrates the muscle or connective tissue it begins to replicate and then infiltrates the peripheral nerves through the neuromuscular junction. From there, RV spreads to the central nervous system (CNS) in the endoneurium of the Schwann cells. If bitten by an animal that may have RV infection, rabies immune globulin and rabies vaccine should be administered. Otherwise, there is no treatment for infection by RV other than supportive care, and acute infection of the CNS is almost always fatal. In countries where preventative care is not practiced, RV is still widespread. In Asia, 30,000 people die annually from RV infection. Diagnosis of RV is done on two tissue specimens from the brain that are analyzed by direct fluorescent antibody (DFA), mouse inoculation, tissue culture and polymerase chain reaction.[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3307483/]
