SOX-2 is a transcription factor essential in the early development and maintenance of pluripotent embryonic stem cells and stem cells in a number of adult tissues of mammals. SOX-2 is important to continued self-renewal and to maintain the required numbers of basal cells in adult tracheal epithelium. It directs the developing branches of the bronchial tree and the growth of the epithelium of the airways. SOX-2 has been found to be overexpressed in squamous cell lung cancer when compared to adenocarcinomas. PMID: 20548776 Ongoing studies are investigating the utility of the SOX-2 antibody being used as a biomarker for the early detection of lung cancer in high risk asymptomatic patients.
