Vaginal pathogens panel - Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Active
69566-8 Bacterial vaginosis associated bacterium 2 DNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
The result (score) for this test is based on the quantity of Bacterial Vaginosis Associated Bacterium 2 (BVAB2) in vaginal fluid by nucleic acid amplification compared to known calibrator values. The score is used to determine the presence of bacterial vaginosis (see LOINC 69564-3).

Part Descriptions
LP140227-2 Bacterial vaginosis associated bacterium 2
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection, occurring when there is an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina. BV infections are complex and polymicrobial, involving multiple species of bacteria, including Megasphaera species Type 1 (Mega1), Atopobium vaginae, and Bacterial Vaginosis Associated Bacterium 2 (BVAB2), which can grow in excess and cause vaginal irritation. BVAB2 is originally identified by 16S ribosomal sequences from vaginal flora of women with BV (as being in the order Clostridialis).

62460-1 Candida sp DNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP14808-7 Candida sp
Systemic candidiasis is an invasive yeast infection caused primarily by C. albicans, although other Candida species can also be the cause. It leads to septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and rarely as osteomyelitis. Superficial candidiasis is common, but generally only immunocompromised patients have systemic candidiasis. Because Candida species are common contaminants, diagnosis is difficult and requires the elimination of other possible causes.

69563-5 Candida glabrata DNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP140225-6 Candida glabrata
Previously known as Torulopsis glabrata, Candida glabrata is a fungal saprophyte that is part of the normal flora of human mucosal tissues and is usually nonpathogenic. Unlike other species of Candida, C glabarata has a nondimorphic blastoconicial morphology and a haploid genome. C glabrata often is implicated in superficial infections of the mouth, esophagus, vagina, urinary tract, and in systemic candida infections. C glabrata infection has become common in patients on immunosuppressive therapy and in patients with diabetes. It can be difficult to treat since it is resistant to a number of antifungal agents including fluconazole. As a result, immunocompromised patients have a high mortality rate when infected with C glabrata. PMID: 9880475

72389-0 Candida krusei DNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
Vulvovaginal candidiasis is usually caused by Candida albicans, but other Candida species can be the causative agent.
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP145685-6 Candida krusei
Candida krusei is an elongated facultative saprophyte of variable shape and size. It takes on both yeast and pseudohyphae morphological forms. It is found in various natural habitats including in the atmosphere, fruits, sewage, silage, soil, dairy, meat, pickles, sugar, wine, and beer. Serious infections are seen in immunocompromised patients with hematologic malignancies, especially leukemia, and in transplant recipients. A rise in the number of infections with C krusei is associated with the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the use of the antifungal triazole fluconazole. C krusei is also the cause of infection due to invasive medical procedures performed on immunocompromised patients that can cause endophthalmitis, arthritis, and endocarditis. Mortality rates due to C. krusei
bloodstream infection have been reported at nearly 50%.C krusei is naturally resistant to fluconazole and has decreased susceptibility to both flucytosine and amphotericin B. PMID: 18077633 PMID: 7966200

62461-9 Trichomonas vaginalis DNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP14413-6 Trichomonas vaginalis
Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is an anaerobic, flagellated parasitic protozoan that is among the most common non-viral sexually transmitted organisms whose only known host is humans. It is estimated that 170 million new cases occur worldwide and it is the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. TV is known to increase HIV acquisition and transmission in both men and women by acting as a cofactor to increase susceptibility to HIV of an uninfected partner and infectivity of HIV of an infected partner. In women, infection with TV is a possible risk factor for developing cervical neoplasia, post-operative infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, atypical pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. In men, infection with TV can lead to non-gonococcal urethritis, infertility, chronic prostatitis and decreased sperm motility. Diagnosis is most often made using wet mount microscopy which has a sensitivity of only 52%. Other diagnostic methods include Pap smear, culture and PCR with sensitivities of 56%, 78% and 84%, respectively. There is an estimated 5 million new cases of TV annually in the United States and yet TV is still not a reportable disease. Treatment for TV is with metronidazole though emerging metronidazole-resistant strains have been reported. Asymptomatic infection can persist for months to years. 70165-6 Trichomonas vaginalis rRNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
94421-5 Candida glabrata RNA [Presence] in Vaginal fluid by NAA with probe detection
