Fusobacterium is a genus of anaerobic, Gram-negative, non-sporulating organisms commonly found in oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal and genital tracts.[NCBI Books: NBK8438] Within the genus, the two most commonly isolated pathogens in clinical specimens are F. nucleatum (61%) followed by F. necrophorum (25%). PMID: 23734900 F. necrophorum is the most virulent and may cause severe infections, such as pharyngotonsillitis, jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis, and general sepsis particularly in children and young adults. Resistance to erythromycin and other macrolides is common in Fusobacterium. PMID: 21506900
