LP16662-6 Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are cocci-shaped gram-positive bacteria that assemble in grape-like clusters and cause a wide variety of infections. Up to 50% of adults carry S. aureus on their skin or in their mucous membranes. It is highly adaptable, resulting in drug resistant strains: methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), methicillin-susceptbile S. aureus (MSSA), vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA). Examples of human infections caused by S. aureus: bacteremia, gastroenteritis, infective endocarditis, meningitis, osteomyelitis, pulmonary infections, septic arthritis, skin and soft tissue infections, toxic shock syndrome, and urinary tract infections. Diagnosis of S. aureus infection may vary by infection site, e.g., clinical signs and symptoms for skin infections, blood or tissue cultures for other infection types. People with chronic health conditions, weakened immune systems or IV drug users are at a greater risk, as are patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and those with a history of certain types of surgeries and patients with implanted medical devices. LP200488-7 Staphylococcus aureus capsular polysaccharide enzyme (cpe) gene
The Staphylococcus aureus capsular polysaccharide enzyme (cpe) gene identifies the presence of Staph aureus (SA) regardless of antibiotic resistance. The SCCmec cassette-orfX junction (also called the SCCmec cassette right extremity junction region) is a nucleic acid target that specifically identifies methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA). These two tests can be used together to distinguish the presence of SA from MRSA.

Part Descriptions
LP34425-6 Staphylococcus aureus.methicillin resistant
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a staph infection that is resistant to multiple antibiotics. MRSA frequently causes skin infections, but can also cause pneumonia and, if untreated, can lead to sepsis. MRSA is spread when a person comes in contact with an infected wound or by sharing personal items with a person infected with MRSA. The risk of infection is increased in crowded spaces such as gyms, daycare centers, military bases, and patients being treated as inpatients in medical facilities. Studies have shown that one in three people are asymptomatic carriers of staph in their nose and that two people in 100 are carriers of MRSA. To prevent contracting MRSA, maintain good personal hygiene by frequently hand washing and bathing often, especially after exercise. Keep scrapes and open wounds covered and get medical attention for skin infections. MRSA infection of the skin may initially resemble a spider bite, but can become red, swollen, painful, warm to the touch, filled with pus, and accompanied by a fever.[https://www.cdc.gov/mrsa/index.html]

77682-3 Staphylococcus aureus methicillin resistance SCCmec+orfX junction [Presence] in Nose by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
This assay is not intended to diagnose MRSA infections nor to guide or monitor treatment. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's BD GeneOhm MRSA Assay test kit which directly detects, through the presence of SCCmec cassette at the orfX junction, nasal colonization by methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) to aid in the prevention and control of infections in healthcare settings, for patients at risk.

Part Descriptions
LP190755-1 Staphylococcus aureus methicillin resistance SCCmec+orfX junction
Methicillin resistance in S. aureus is primarily mediated by the mecA gene which is carried on a mobile genetic element called the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which integrates at an open reading frame in the S. aureus genome known as orfX.
