Cerumen [Presence] in Ear
Active
Term Description
The amount of ceruminous debris seen in the left ear by visual inspection of the ear and/or ear swab or as seen by light microscopy. In veterinary medicine, the presence of excessive cerumen can cause symptoms of hearing loss, lead to the development of an infection, and inhibit the effectiveness of topical medications.[MERCK VET: eye-and-ear] The clinical course for each ear may be tracked separately in order to monitor response to treatment.

Part Description
LP263641-5 Cerumen
Cerumen (earwax) is a brown, yellowish waxy substance secreted by the ceruminous and sebaceous glands of the outside ear canal. It cleans, protects and lubricates the ear canal. Accumulation of cerumen (impaction) can lead to partial or complete obstruction of the ear canal, potentially causing hearing loss and preventing assessment of the ear. PMID: 28925660
