88341-3 Cerumen [Presence] in Ear
Term Description
The amount of ceruminous debris seen in the left ear by visual inspection of the ear and/or ear swab or as seen by light microscopy. In veterinary medicine, the presence of excessive cerumen can cause symptoms of hearing loss, lead to the development of an infection, and inhibit the effectiveness of topical medications.[MERCK VET: eye-and-ear] The clinical course for each ear may be tracked separately in order to monitor response to treatment.

Part Descriptions
LP263641-5 Cerumen
Cerumen (earwax) is a brown, yellowish waxy substance secreted by the ceruminous and sebaceous glands of the outside ear canal. It cleans, protects and lubricates the ear canal. Accumulation of cerumen (impaction) can lead to partial or complete obstruction of the ear canal, potentially causing hearing loss and preventing assessment of the ear. PMID: 28925660

88343-9 Leukocytes [Presence] in Ear by Light microscopy
Term Description
The amount of leukocytes (inflammatory cells) present in an ear swab sample from the left external canal. In veterinary medicine, this test is useful for the initial diagnosis of an external ear infection, guides the treatment based on if and how many inflammatory cells are seen, and allows for the tracking of response to treatment. The clinical course and response to treatment for each ear may be tracked separately.

LP14419-3 Leukocytes
Leukocytes or white blood cells (WBCs) are immune cells that fight infection, neoplasms and other inflammatory conditions, and mediate allergic responses. There are five types of WBCs normally present in the circulation that are all derived from a similar stem cell in the bone marrow. The five type of WBCs are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of granules in the cytoplasm. The granulocytes include the neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils. The non-granulocytes include the lymphocytes and the monocytes. The neutrophils fight infection by ingesting and digesting bacteria. Eosinophils and basophils respond to allergic reactions and are capable of ingesting antigen-antibody complexes. Monocytes phagocytose bacteria and release interferon to stimulate the immune system. Lymphocytes are divided into T-cells and B-cells. T-cell immunity is cellular and involves the activation of phagocytes and B-cell immunity uses antibodies to fight infection. Both elevated and low leukocyte counts can be markers of infection and malignancy, and low leukocyte counts are associated with a variety of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, depending on the WBC type(s) that are out of range. Term Description
The predominant leukocyte type (e.g. neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes) identified in an ear swab sample from the left external canal. 88342-1 Malassezia sp [Presence] in Ear by Light microscopy
Term Description
The presence (none, few, marked, etc.) of Malassezia (fungi) in an ear swab sample taken from the left external ear. In veterinary medicine, Malassezia species, particularly M. pachydermatis, are commonly found in low numbers in the ear canals of healthy dogs and cats. When the ears are pruritic (itchy), an overgrowth of the fungi is suspected and anti-fungal treatment may be needed. When a dark exudate is seen in the canal, the presence of either Malassezia species or a parasite is likely but may also be seen with a bacterial infection.[MERCK VET: eye-and-ear] The clinical course for each ear may be tracked separately in order to monitor response to treatment.

Part Descriptions
LP30599-2 Malassezia sp
The yeast genus Malassezia (previously designated Pityrosporum) have been associated with a number of diseases affecting the human skin, such as pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS), psoriasis, and-less commonly-with other dermatologic disorders such as confluent and reticulated papillomatosis, onychomycosis, and transient acantholytic dermatosis. Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection. Because they are difficult to isolate, the clinical role of Malassezia had been somewhat controversial. PMID: 15523360

88344-7 Intracellular bacteria [Presence] in Ear by Light microscopy
Term Description
The presence (none, few, marked, etc.) of intracellular bacteria (e.g. cocci or bacilli) in an ear swab sample taken from the left external ear. In veterinary medicine, the presence of intracellular bacteria in ear specimens indicates a more active leukemic cell response than simply the presence of white cells. In cases where white cells and bacteria are in proximity but the bacteria do not appear to be ingested suggests either sample contamination, ineffective neutrophils, or that the bacteria seen are not the cause of the inflammation.

Term Description
The presence (none, few, marked, etc.) of bacilliform (rod-shaped) bacteria in an ear swab sample taken from the left external ear. 88338-9 Coccal bacteria [Presence] in Ear by Light microscopy
Term Description
The presence (none, few, marked, etc.) of coccal (round-shaped) bacteria in an ear swab sample taken from the left external ear. In veterinary medicine, determining whether coccal or bacilliform bacteria are present in the external ear can help with diagnosis and guide treatment.
