Part Descriptions
LP262455-1 Escherichia coli aidA-I gene
Escherichia coli (EC) is a gram-negative, flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium. [https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/colibacillosis] There are six classes of EC that cause diarrhea, one of which is the diffusely adhering E. coli (DAEC) class. Within the DAEC class is a class of strains of EC that expresses an adhesin involved in diffuse adherence (AIDA-I) which is encoded by the aidA-I gene. The AIDA-I protein is a multifunctional autotransporter protein that regulates the aggregation of bacteria and formation of biofilm. PMID: 17933890
Veterinary Medicine:
The Strains of EC that possess the aidA-I gene can infect swine and cause edema disease and postweaning diarrhea (PWD), both of which have significant negative economic impacts on farms across the world. PMID: 17933890

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.Changed Component from 'Bacterial intimin (eaeA) gene' to 'Escherichia coli eaeA gene' because the eaeA gene, which encodes intimin, is specific to E. coli.

87370-3 Escherichia coli fasA gene [Presence] in Isolate by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP262456-9 Escherichia coli fasA gene
Escherichia coli (EC) is a gram-negative, flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium that is composed of a stable core set of genes and another more fluid set of genes that include the virulence genes. These virulence genes encode heat-stable and heat-labile enterotoxins, Shiga toxin 2e, and fimbria including the F6 (also known as 987P and encoded by the fasA gene [UniProt: P21413]) fimbria and can be transferred laterally between dividing EC. PMID: 7021219[https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/colibacillosis] E. coli infection in pigs causes post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) which leads to watery diarrhea, dehydration, loss of body weight, and occasionally death. EC adheres to the small intestine using adhesin factors and produces one or more exotoxins that induce fluid and electrolyte secretion. PMID: 7648523 The pilus 987P is often present on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) found in the intestines of neonatal pigs, causing severe diarrheal disease. PMID: 6111559

87375-2 Escherichia coli paa gene [Presence] in Isolate by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP262448-6 Escherichia coli paa gene
The Escherichia coli (EC) paa gene encodes the porcine attaching-effacing associated (PAA) protein. PAA helps initiate the early stages of post-weaning diarrhea (PWD). Porcine enteropathogenic E. coli (PEPEC) is a non-enterotoxigenic strain of E. coli that causes PWD. PEPEC attaches to intestinal epithelial cells in a characteristic pattern called attaching and effacing (A/E). To achieve a close attachment to the enterocytes, PEPEC produces an outer membrane protein called intimin that is critical to induce the distinctive A/E lesion. PAA is the protein that assists in the A/E and lesion production of EC. PMID: 24294249[http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/?query=paa+escherichia+coli&sort=score]

87377-8 Escherichia coli Stx2 toxin stx2 gene [Presence] in Isolate by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP262477-5 Escherichia coli Stx2 toxin stx2 gene
The Stx1 toxin A subunit is encoded by the stx1 gene [www.uniprot.org/uniprot/ ?query=stx1+escherichia+coli&sort=score] and the Stx2 toxin A subunit is encoded by the stx2 gene.[UniProt: K0JD26] Stx1a and Stx2a are produced by some serogroups of Escherichia coli (also known as Vero toxins and previously referred to as Shiga-like toxins) are two cytotoxins that cause hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The two toxins produce similar symptoms, but are immunologically unique. Both toxins are composed of a single copy of subunit A and five copies of subunit B. Stx1a and Stx1b induce host cell apoptosis by removing an adenine residue from the 28S rRNA of the 60S ribosome, with RNA-N-glycosidase activity provided by subunit A. The five B subunits bind to the host cell receptor present on endothelial cells. PMID: 25530917 Shigella toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) has become a serious food-borne pathogen. Outbreaks of STEC have been associated with the consumption of pork products resulting in HC and HUS. STEC in swine has been demonstrated to cause edema disease. Epidemiological studies throughout the world have proven that STEC can be harbored and shed by domestic swine. PMID: 24397985

87380-2 Escherichia coli Stx2e toxin stx2e gene [Presence] in Isolate by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP262474-2 Escherichia coli Stx2e toxin stx2e gene
Veterinary Medicine:
The Escherichia coli (EC) stx2e encodes Shiga-like toxin 2e (Stx2e). PMID: 11427031 This toxin is excreted by EC that infects newly weaned pigs and causes edema disease. This EC toxin does not affect humans. The symptoms of edema disease include neurological disorders, hemorrhagic lesions, and is often fatal. Stx2e is made up of an enzymatically active A subunit and five B subunits. The B subunits bind to glycolipid receptors of the host cells. A recently developed neutralizing nanobody has been produced to bind to the B subunits and prevent them from binding to the host cell. This nanobody will likely be used to treat edema disease in pigs in the future. PMID: 25053417
