Part Descriptions
LP14255-1 Cytomegalovirus
Cytomegalovirus is a member of the family Herpesviridae and also known as Human Herpesvirus-5 (HHV-5). It contains a linear double-stranded DNA encased in an icosahedral capsid that is surrounded by a viral envelope. It replicates slowly and may take weeks for the infection to become visible microscopically. Its life cycle includes a lytic and a latent phase. During the lytic phase the cytoskeleton of the infected cell is disrupted and becomes very large. The enlarged cell eludes detection by natural killer (NK) cells by encoding UL16. UL16 is a protein that binds to the ligand NDG2D which is a surface receptor on NK cells and, when blocked, prevents the CMV infected cell from apoptotic signaling to NK cells to destroy it.[https://pedclerk.bsd.uchicago.edu/page/cytomegalovirus-cmv] In the US one in three children are infected by CMV by the age of five and over half of adults are infected by age 40. Infection with CMV is mostly asymptomatic. Symptoms when present include fever, sore throat, fatigue, swollen glands. CMV can occasionally lead to mononucleosis or hepatitis. Immunocompromised patients experience much more acute symptoms that can affect the eyes, lungs, liver, esophagus, stomach, and intestines. For babies born with CMV, involvement with the brain, spleen, lung, liver can occur. In addition, there may be growth problems and hearing loss which is the most common symptom in congenital CMV infection. CMV is transmitted in urine, saliva, blood, tears, semen and breast milk by direct contact. Normally no treatment is necessary, but for severe cases medication is available.[https://www.cdc.gov/cmv/overview.html]

- The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.

- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Updated System from Ser since this test can be performed on plasma specimens as well.

These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.

30325-5 Cytomegalovirus IgM Ab [Presence] in Serum or Plasma

47363-7 Cytomegalovirus Ab [Presence] in Serum from Donor by Hemagglutination
Term Description
This test is intended to be used as a primary screening test for the diagnosis of infection with Cytomegalovirus (CMV). This test has been approved by the FDA for the screening of donors of human cells, tissues and tissue-based products. A Positive result is indicative of an infection with CMV, and may be used to disqualify a potential cell or tissue donor. This test is not intended to be used for routine clinical diagnostic testing. This test is required for all donors of "leukocyte-rich" human cells, tissues and tissue-based products

- Change Reason
- Property has been changed from ACnc to reflect the fact that avidity by definition is a ratio.; The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Updated System from Ser to Ser/Plas since this test can also be performed on plasma.
