Canada Health Infoway Inc. / Inforoute Santé du Canada Inc.

How Canada Health Infoway uses LOINC:

Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) is a federally-funded, independent, not-for-profit organization whose Members are Canada's 14 federal, provincial and territorial Deputy Ministers of Health Through our investments, we help deliver better quality and access to care and more efficient delivery of health services for patients and clinicians.

Across Canada, LOINC® is used as the basis for the pan-Canadian LOINC Observation Code Database (pCLOCD). The database has been customized to meet the needs of Canadian stakeholders, following LOINC copyright rules. Together with appropriate message specifications these standards are used to achieve an interoperable pan-Canadian EHR and facilitate the electronic exchange of laboratory information.

The pCLOCD was created using the LOINC records and attributes that specifically meet Canadian laboratory ordering and reporting requirements. Working with Regenstrief, Infoway has translated the LOINC records to Canadian French, which enables the pCLOCD to be published on InfoCentral and maintained in Canada’s two official languages.

Infoway has identified that in order to realize its vision of healthier Canadians through innovative digital health solutions, the acceleration of Clinical Interoperability is a fundamental imperative. Today, the Digital Health Alliance, launched officially in 2015, represents the national collaborative effort to accelerate clinical interoperability in Canada. The pCLOCD has been implemented in nearly every province and territory in Canada, making LOINC the Canadian standard for laboratory ordering, reporting and lab interoperability.
