Part Descriptions
LP17911-6 Carbophenothion
Carbophenothion is a yellow-brown liquid organophosphate and cholinesterase inhibitor. It is used to treat vegetables, fruits, nuts, ornamental plants, and forestry sites for insects, mites, and ticks. It has been established that carbophenothion has a high degree of oral toxicity, but too few studies have been performed to establish toxic levels and symptoms of acute or chronic exposure, whether it's a human carcinogen, and whether it is a teratogen. Carbophenothion is extremely toxic to freshwater fish, freshwater invertebrates, and marine and estuarine organisms.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/insect-mite/cadusafos-cyromazine/carbophenothion/insect-prof-carbophe.html]

87747-2 Chlorpyrifos [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Term Description
The primary use of chlorpyrifos is in the agricultural setting where animals may eat or become contaminated with it.
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP17863-9 Chlorpyrifos
Chlorpyrifos is an amber to white crystalline broad spectrum organophosphate and cholinesterase inhibitor. It was originally developed to kill the larval stage of mosquitoes, but is now used to treat cutworms, corn rootworms, cockroaches, grubs, flea beetles, flies, termites, fire ants, and lice found on crops such as cotton, fruit, nuts, vegetables, as well as lawns and ornamental plants. Chlorpyrifos can also be applied directly on sheep, turkeys, in dog kennels, domestic dwellings, farm buildings, and storage bins. It is moderately poisonous to humans causing skin and eye irritation. If chlorpyrifos is absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested, systemic intoxication from the inhibition of cholinesterase activity has been known to occur. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that chlorpyrifos does not affect human reproduction, is not teratogenic, is not mutagenic, and is not carcinogenic. Chlorpyrifos is toxic to birds, freshwater fish, aquatic invertebrates, and estuarine and marine organisms. Chlorpyrifos can be extremely toxic to wildlife and honeybees.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/chlorpyrifos-ext.html]

A organothiophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor that is used as an anthelmintic, insecticide, and as a nematocide.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP19561-7 Coumaphos
Coumaphos is a tan, crystalline solid insecticide and organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitor. Coumaphos is used to treat insects on livestock including cattle grubs, screw-worms, lice, scabies, flies, and ticks. It also can be used against ectoparasites that live on sheep, goats, horses, pigs, and poultry. It is highly toxic if inhaled or ingested and is moderately toxic if absorbed through the skin. Symptoms of poisoning in humans are usually due to the inhibition of cholinesterase and include diarrhea, fever, toxic paralysis, fluid retention of the lungs, and high blood pressure. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had determined that coumaphos is not teratogenic. There is no evidence that it is mutagenic or carcinogenic. Coumaphos is extremely poisonous to birds and aquatic invertebrates, and moderately poisonous to fish. It is a moderate threat to honey bees.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/coumaphos-ext.html]

87750-6 Dichlorvos [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP18945-3 Dichlorvos
Dichlorvos is colorless to amber liquid with a mild chemical odor that is used as an insecticide in households, for public health, and in stored products. It is an organophosphate and cholinesterase inhibitor that is used to treat mushroom flies, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, and white flies in greenhouses, outdoor fruit, and vegetable crops. It is also used in dogs, livestock, and humans as a remedy against parasitic worm infections. Dichlorvos is highly toxic if inhaled, absorbed through the skin or ingested. The most common route of exposure is through inhalation. Symptoms of poisoning by inhalation include bloody or runny nose, coughing, chest discomfort, difficult or short breath, and wheezing due to constriction or excess fluid in the bronchial tubes. Domestic animals that have been treated with dichlorvos with a slow-release formula for internal parasites have exhibited symptoms of cholinesterase inhibition such as nausea or diarrhea. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified dichlorvos to be a mutagen and possible human carcinogen. Dichlorvos is highly toxic to birds and bees but does not significantly bioaccumulate in fish. Ultraviolet light increases the toxicity of dichlorvos in aquatic wildlife by 5-150 times.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/dichlorvos-ext.html]

87664-9 Dimethoate [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP19562-5 Dimethoate
Dimethoate is a colorless, crystalline solid cholinesterase inhibitor that kills insects and mites systemically or on contact. It is effective against aphids, thrips, planthoppers, whiteflies, ornamental plants, alfalfa, apples, corn, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, melons, oranges, pears, pecans, safflower, sorghum, soybeans, tangerines, tobacco, tomatoes, watermelons, wheat and other vegetables. Dimethoate is also sprayed onto farm buildings to eradicate house flies and used on livestock against botflies. Demethoate is extremely toxic if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin. Symptoms of inhalation exposure include bloody or runny nose, coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Extreme exposure will lead to incoordination, slurred speech, loss of reflexes, weakness, fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions, twitching, tremors of the tongue or eyelids, and eventual paralysis of the extremities and respiratory muscles. Dimethoate is a possible human teratogen and carcinogen. It is dangerously poisonous to birds, fish, aquatic invertebrates, and honey bees. Dimethoate is rapidly broken down in the environment and in sewage treatment plants.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/dienochlor-glyphosate/dimethoate-ext.html]

Part Descriptions
LP262670-5 Isofenphos
Isofenphos is a colorless oil and organophosphate that is used to control soil-dwelling insects such as white grubs, cabbage root flies, corn roundworms and wireworms. It is a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) that is highly toxic and must have DANGER-POISON printed on its container label. Isofenphos is an insecticide for vegetables including maize and carrots, for fruits such as bananas, for soils with turfgrass, and for termites in and around buildings. Symptoms of acute toxicity in humans would likely mimic those of other organophosphates and include: increased secretions, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, urination, pupil contraction, slowness of the heart-very high doses may lead to convulsions and coma. The primary effect of chronic exposure to isofenphos is the inhibition of acetyl cholinesterase in the circulation which regulates inter-cellular nerve activity.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/isofenphos-ext.html]

87646-6 Methyl parathion [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP19293-7 Methyl parathion
Methyl parathion is a white, crystalline solid organophosphate insecticide and acaricide. It is used to control boll weevils and biting and sucking insects of agricultural crops. Methyl parathion inhibits the enzymatic activity of cholinesterase which is required for the healthy functioning of the nervous system in humans, animals, and insects. It is extremely toxic if inhaled or ingested and moderately toxic when absorbed by the skin. Early symptoms of exposure to methyl parathion include bloody or runny nose, cough, chest discomfort, difficult or short breath, and wheezing due to constriction or excess fluid in the bronchial tubes. After extreme exposure, symptoms can include involuntary defecation or urination, psychosis, irregular heartbeat, unconsciousness, convulsions, coma, and death due to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. Methyl parathion is a possible teratogen but not believed to be a carcinogen. It is rapidly metabolized by plants and animals and is assumed not to persist or bioaccumulate in the environment.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/methyl-parathion-ext.html]

87630-0 Mevinphos [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP19569-0 Mevinphos
Mevinphos is an organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitor used as an insecticide and acaricide on vegetables, alfalfa, deciduous fruits and nuts.[PubChem:5355863] Mevinphos controls a wide variety of insects, mites and ticks including aphids, grasshoppers, leafhoppers, cutworms and caterpillars that feed on field, forage, vegetable and fruit crops. Menivphos prevents cholinesterase from lysing acetylcholine into choline and acetic acid which prevents the nervous system from functioning correctly. Menivphos kills the insect on contact or when they feed on plants that have absorbed it. Menivphos is highly toxic, affecting the central nervous system, respiratory system and eyes. There is a huge occupational risk since menivphos can be absorbed through the skin, lungs, and mucous membranes. Symptoms of poison can be apparent within 15 minutes of exposure, but can be delayed for up to 2 days. Early symptoms of poisoning include impaired judgement or ability to reason. Later symptoms include giddiness, tightness in the chest, blurred vision, tearing, hearing issues, loss of muscle coordination, slurred speech, mental confusion, breathing difficulty, increased blood pressure, convulsions, and coma.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/metiram-propoxur/mevinphos-ext.html]

87633-4 Phorate [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP18142-7 Phorate
Phorate is an organophosphate insecticide and acaricide that is used to control sucking and chewing insects, leafhoppers, leafminers, mites, nematodes, and rootworms. It is applied to pine forests, field crops that include corn, cotton, coffee, and ornamental, herbaceous plants, and bulbs. Phorate is among the most poisonous insecticides in use and is classified as a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) that can only be applied by certified applicators. Symptoms of toxicity after acute oral exposure include blurred vision, headache, an inability to concentrate, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat and respiration rates, tremors, excessive sweating, confusion, and convulsions. Extremely high doses of phorate can lead to death resulting from respiratory arrest or lung constrictions. Like other organophosphate insecticides, phorate is a cholinesterase inhibitor. Cholinesterase is an essential enzyme for nervous system function. Chronic exposure to phorate has resulted in slow thinking, memory defects, irritability, delayed reaction time, and anxiety. There is no evidence that phorate causes gene mutations or carcinogenicity. It is highly toxic to birds, freshwater fish, and aquatic invertebrates.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/metiram-propoxur/phorate-ext.html]

87754-8 Terbufos [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP19571-6 Terbufos
Terbufos is a clear, slightly brown-yellow liquid and an organophosphate used as a nematicide on corn, sugar beets, and grain sorghum. Terbufos is lethal against wireworms, seedcorn maggots, white grubs, corn rootworm larvae and more. Because of its extreme toxicity, terbufos is labeled with the signal word DANGER and can only be handled by certified applicators. After ingesting terbufos symptoms of acute poisoning can include nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, salivation, excessive sweating and diarrhea. If terbufos is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, the inhibition of cholinesterase may occur leading to chest tightness, wheezing, blurred vision, fatigue, headache, slurred speech, and confusion. If the level of terbufos is high enough, the respiratory muscles may become paralyzed resulting in death. Terbufos does not appear to be mutagenic or likely to cause any reproductive issues in humans. It not classified as a human carcinogen. Terbufos is extremely toxic to birds, mammals, and reptiles.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/pyrethrins-ziram/terbufos-ext.html]

87634-2 Aldicarb [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP70670-2 Aldicarb
Aldicarb is a carbamate ester pesticide (Temik). It is a white crystalline solid, moderately soluble in water, and susceptible to oxidation and hydrolytic reactions. Exposure of the general population occurs mainly through food. The ingestion of contaminated food has led to poisoning incidents from aldicarb and its toxic metabolites (sulfoxide and sulfone). Due to its high acute toxicity, both inhalation and skin contact under occupational exposure conditions may be dangerous for workers if preventive measures are inadequate. It is efficiently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and, to a lesser extent, through the skin, and could also be readily absorbed by the respiratory tract if dust were present. The excretion is rapid and primarily via the urine. Aldicarb does not accumulate in the body as a result of long-term exposure. Non-fatal poisoning in man is rapidly reversible and recovery is aided by the administration of atropine. There is no substantial evidence to indicate that aldicarb is teratogenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, or immunotoxic.

Term Description
The primary use of chlordane is in the agricultural setting where animals may eat or become contaminated with it.
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP18018-9 Chlordane
Chlordane is a colorless or amber-colored liquid organochlorine insecticide. Because chlordane is a likely human carcinogen, its application to soil in the United States was halted in April, 1988. Chlordane may now be used only to treat fire ants in power transformers. Chlordane is considered moderately to highly toxic when in contact or absorbed by the eyes and skins, inhaled, or ingested. Extreme exposure to chlordane can lead to symptoms of poisoning including nausea, vomiting and gut pain followed by convulsions. Early signs of exposure include agitation or excitation, but may be followed by depression, loss of coordination, fatigue, and confusion. Individuals who are chronically exposed to chlordane may show signs of jaundice. Chlordane damages blood vessels, kidneys and can lead to aplastic anemia and leukemia. Chlordane is highly poisonous to freshwater invertebrates and fish. It does bioaccumulate in bacteria and in marine and freshwater fish. Chlordane is extremely toxic to bees and earthworms. Chlordane is broken down when heated into poisonous gases including phosgene, toxic and corrosive fumes of chlorine, and oxides of carbon. It may remain in contaminated soil for up to 20 years.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/chlordane-ext.html]

Part Descriptions
LP18865-3 Dechlorane
Dechlorane is a white, stable odorless, synthetic, crystalline solid organochlorine insecticide and fire- retardant. As an insecticide, dechlorane was used to kill fire ants. When it was discovered to be a bioaccumulative pollutant in 1976, it was banned from use in the United States. As a fire-retardant, dechlorane was added to plastics, paint, rubber, paper, and electrical appliances. Symptoms of exposure to dechlorane can irritate the skin and eyes, cause headaches and dizziness, and nausea and vomiting. In addition, dechlorane can adversely affect the central nervous system, lungs, liver and kidneys. Dechlorane is also carcinogenic.[PubChem:16945]

87640-9 Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP15060-4 Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene
Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) is the primary metabolite of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). After World War II, DDT was heavily used as an insecticide in agricultural and household settings. It was a main component of garden sprays, vegetable dusts and applied to carpets to eradicate fleas. DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, but can still be used in emergency health situations to combat mosquitoes infected with malaria and yellow fever, and by prescription to treat body lice. DDT and DDE are slow to decompose and remain in the environment for a very long time. DDT and DDE are rarely detected in groundwater since they are nearly insoluble in water, but adhere tightly to soil particles where they can remain for many years. DDE is at least as toxic as DDT. Exposure to DDE is mostly by ingesting contaminated food bought in countries where the use of DDT is still prevalent. Foods commonly found to be polluted with DDT and DDE include root crops, leafy vegetables, fatty meats, fish, and poultry. Other sources of DDT and DDE in the environment can be found in contaminated air, dust, and water near waste sites and landfills with high levels of DDT and DDE.[http://www.unce.unr.edu/publications/files/nr/2003/sp0316.pdf]

87639-1 Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP15061-2 Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is an organochlorine insecticide used to manage mosquito-born malaria. DDT was heavily used during World War II to protect the troops from insect typhus and malaria vectors. Post 1945, DDT was broadly applied to crops as an insecticide. Sweden banned the use of DDT in 1970 and the United States followed suit in 1972. Technical grade DDT is comprised of three isomers which are: p,p-DDT isomer, which is the most abundant and o,p'-DDT and o,o'-DDT that are present in much lower quantities. DDT is easily absorbed in the intestinal tract, but not as easily absorbed through the skin unless it is in solution. Symptoms of low to moderate exposure to DDT by humans include nausea, diarrhea, increased liver enzymes, irritation of the eyes, nose or throat, disturbed gait, malaise, and excitability. Tremors and convulsions can occur in humans at increased levels of exposure. Experimental animals exposed to DDT have experienced damage to the nervous system, liver, kidney and immune system. In contrast, humans have shown no evidence of liver, kidney or immune system damage due to DDT exposure. DDT is highly toxic to aquatic wildlife, especially invertebrates and fish. The thinning of egg shells of birds exposed to DDT is thought to be due to DDE, the primary metabolite of DDT. DDT is very slow to decompose in the soil and its estimated half-life is 2-15 years. In water, the half-life of DDT in lakes is 56 days and in rivers is 28 days.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/ddt-ext.html]

LP17906-6 Heptachlor epoxide
Heptachlor epoxide is an organochlorine that is produced when heptachlor is oxidized. The oxidation process is carried out by many plants and animals, including humans, when they are exposed to heptachlor. Heptachlor is easily oxidized to heptachlor epoxide when it is exposed to air. Heptachlor was used to treat insects found in homes, buildings, and on food crops, mainly corn. Heptachlor is toxic to humans and animals, causing irritability, salivation and dizziness when recurrently inhaled or exposed in and around the mouth. Heptachlor production gradually ended in the 1980s, but remains in the soil and in hazardous waste sites. Heptachlor epoxide is more prevalent in the environment than heptachlor.[PubChem:13930]

87649-0 Lindane [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP15064-6 Lindane
Lindane is an organchlorine insecticide and fumigant that poisons soil-dwelling and plant-eating insects. The Environmental Protection Agency cancelled the use of lindane in the dairy and agricultural industries and it is no longer produced in the United States. It is currently an ingredient in lotions, creams, and shampoos to eradicate lice and mites in humans. Lindane is highly toxic and symptoms of acute exposure in humans include mental and motor retardation, central nervous system excitation, convulsions, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, dermatitis, loss of balance, grinding of teeth, and hyper-irritability. Lindane is extremely toxic to fish, bees and aquatic invertebrates. It persists in fresh and salt water ecosystems. Lindane enters plants when it is directly applied to them, from contaminated water, and from vapors of lindane.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/lindane-ext.html]

87647-4 Methoxychlor [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP15065-3 Methoxychlor
Methoxychlor is an organochlorine pesticide that has a comparatively low toxicity and transitory persistence in biological systems. Since the ban on Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in 1972, the use of methoxychlor has gone up. Methoxychlor is used as a general purpose pesticide in agriculture, households, on ornamental plants, and to kill parasites on dairy and beef cattle. There is no evidence that methoxychlor damages genetic material or is an animal carcinogen. While methoxychlor does not bioaccumulate in the tissue of mammals, it is very persistent in soil and has a half-live of more than six months.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/methoxychlor-ext.html]

87650-8 Methomyl [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP262709-1 Methomyl
Methomyl is a carbamate and cholinesterase inhibitor insecticide and acaricide used on vegetables, fruit crops, field crops, cotton, commercial ornamental plants, and in and around poultry houses and dairies. It is both a contact and systemic insecticide and is not toxic to plants that absorb it. Methomyl is a cholinesterase inhibitor that impacts the normal functioning of the nervous system. Methomyl is extremely toxic to humans when it is ingested or absorbed through the eyes. It is moderately toxic when it is inhaled and less toxic if exposed to the skin. Symptoms of methomyl poisoning include weakness, blurred vision, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, chest discomfort, constriction of pupils, sweating, muscle tremors, and reduced pulse rate. Severe exposure to methomyl can result in twitching, giddiness, confusion, loss of muscle coordination, slurred speech, low blood pressure, heart irregularities, and loss of reflexes. Methomyl can be fatal due to respiratory failure, respiratory muscle paralysis, severe constriction of the openings to the lungs, or all three. Methomyl is toxic to fish, birds, aquatic invertebrates, and bees. Soil microbes quickly break down methomyl. Because of its high solubility in water, there is an increased risk for groundwater pollution.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/methomyl-ext.html]

87632-6 Toxaphene [Mass/mass] in Specimen
Part Descriptions
LP19240-8 Toxaphene
Toxaphene is a mixture of hundreds of different chlorinated camphenes and chlorinated terpenes that result from a reaction between chlorine gas and camphene. Toxaphene can exist as a gas or yellow waxy solid that smells like pine. It is a pesticide used heavily in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States to eliminate insects on cotton and other crops, on livestock, and to kill undesirable fish in lakes. Toxaphene was banned in the United States in 1990. Toxaphene pollutes the air when it evaporates, the soil by clinging to soil fragments, and water contaminated with it that flows into rivers, lakes and ponds. Elevated levels of toxaphene are found in predatory fish and mammals where it collects in fatty tissue. The Environmental Protection Agency has listed toxaphene as a probable human carcinogen.
