Part Descriptions
LP15420-0 Amoxicillin+Clavulanate
The combination of Amoxicillin and clavulanate -- also known as Augmentin -- is an oral antibacterial combination consisting of the semisynthetic antibiotic amoxicillin and the -lactamase inhibitor, clavulanate . It is used in the treatment of otitis media, sinusitis, and infections caused by susceptible organisms involving the lower respiratory tract, skin and skin structure, and urinary tract; spectrum same as amoxicillin with additional coverage of beta-lactamase producing B. catarrhalis, H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoeae, and S. aureus (not MRSA). The expanded coverage of this combination makes it a useful alternative when penicillin resistance is present and patients cannot tolerate alternative treatments.

33-1 Ampicillin+Sulbactam [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP15937-3 Ampicillin+Sulbactam
Ampicillin/sulbactam is a combination of the common penicillin-derived antibiotic ampicillin and sulbactam, an inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase. Two different forms of the drug exist. The first, developed in 1987 and marketed in the United States under the tradename Unasyn, is an intravenous antibiotic. The second, an oral form called sultamicillin, is marketed under the trade name Ampictam outside of the United States. Ampicillin/sulbactam is used to treat infections caused by bacteria resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics. Sulbactam blocks the enzyme which breaks down ampicillin and thereby allows ampicillin to attack and kill the bacteria.

73642-1 Iclaprim [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP172566-4 Iclaprim
Iclaprim, codenamed AR-100 and RO-48-2622, is a diaminopyrimidine dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor being developed for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It is structurally related to trimethoprim. In Phase III clinical trials, intravenously-administered iclaprim was found to be as effective as and better tolerated than linezolid in people with skin and soft tissue infections, many caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In vitro, iclaprim is highly active against MRSA, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA), strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to several common antibiotics, and some Gram-negative bacteria. A new drug application for iclaprim was filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March 2008, and a marketing authorisation application (MAA) was accepted by the European Medicines Agency on August 21, 2008. Phase II clinical trials are being conducted to assess whether iclaprim can be taken by mouth as well as intravenously and whether it is effective for the treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia. Iclaprim has been granted fast track status by the FDA

LP172561-5 Ceftolozane+Tazobactam
Ceftolozane is a cephalosporin with powerful activity against Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacteriaceae.[http://aac.asm.org/content/57/4/1577.full] Tazobactam is a beta lactamase inhibitor and penicillin derivative that is effective against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.[PubChem: 123630] Ceftolozane blocks penicillin binding proteins which disrupts bacterial cell-wall synthesis that leads to bacterial cell death. When tazobactam is added to ceftolozane, there is a broader spectrum of antimicrobial activity against resistant strains including extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs).Tazobactam prevents class A beta-lactamases and some class C beta-lactamases from hydrolyzing ceftolozane. Together, ceftolozane+tazobactam are an effective treatment for complicated urinary tract infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. 73648-8 cefTAZidime+Avibactam [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP172560-7 cefTAZidime+Avibactam
Ceftazidime is a third generation cephalosporin that exhibits broad-spectrum treatment against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic bacteria. It is especially effective against Enterobacteriaceae and is resistant to most beta-lactamases. PMID: 3884319 Avibactam is a synthetic non-beta-lactamase inhibitor that is used to treat class A serine carbapenemases including Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC). In 2011, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized the gap in antimicrobials against carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) and made the development of such new antimicrobials among its highest priorities. Ceftazidime+Avibactam was approved by an expedited process in 2014 by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat complicated urinary infections caused by (CPE). When ceftazidime+avibactam and metronidazole are use together, they are approved to treat complicated intra-abdominal CPE infections. The first case of resistance of KPC to ceftazidime-avibactam occurred in 2015 in a patient who had never taken ceftazidime-avibactam.[http://aac.asm.org/content/59/10/6605.full]

Part Descriptions
LP172559-9 Ceftaroline+Avibactam
Ceftaroline fosamil (INN) (pron.: /sɛfˈtærɵliːn/), brand name Teflaro, is an advanced-generatio cephalosporin antibiotic. It is active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Gram-positive bacteria. It retains the activity of later-generation cephalosporins having broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative bacteria. It is currently being investigated for community-acquired pneumonia and complicated skin and skin structure infection. Ceftaroline is being developed by Forest Laboratories, under a license from Takeda. Ceftaroline has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia and acute bacterial skin infections on October 29, 2010. In vitro studies show that it has a similar spectrum to ceftobiprole, the only other fifth-generation cephalosporin to date, although no head to head clinical trials have been conducted. Currently, ceftaroline and ceftobiprole are on an unnamed subclass of cephalosporins by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).

LP172558-1 Ceftaroline

37-2 Azithromycin [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP16090-0 Azithromycin
Azithromycin is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin (brand names Zithromax ® in Italy; Zmax ®; Sumamed ®; Aztrin ®) is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics, and is derived from erythromycin ; however, it differs chemically from erythromycin in that a methyl -substituted nitrogen atom is incorporated into the lactone ring, thus making the lactone ring 15-membered. Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, most often bacteria causing middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and sinusitis. It is also effective against certain sexually transmitted infectious diseases, such as non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. Recent studies have also shown it to be effective against late-onset asthma, but these findings are controversial and not widely accepted as of yet.

Term Description
Aztreonam is a beta lactam antibiotic used totreat infection caused by gram-negative bacteria. It is inactivated by extended spectrum beta lactamase producing bacteria. Information from Wikipedia accessed 2008 08 01.
Source: Regenstrief Institute
Part Descriptions
LP16041-3 Aztreonam
Aztreonam (Azactam®) is a monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic (a monobactam) originally isolated from Chromobacterium violaceum. It is resistant to some beta-lactamases, but is inactivated by extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. Aztreonam is effective against gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is not effective against gram-positive bacteria or anaerobes. Aztreonam has to be administered intravenously, as the compound is poorly absorbed when given orally. Side-effects include reactions at the injection site, diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal symptoms. There is limited cross-reactivity between aztreonam and other beta-lactam antibiotics, and it is generally considered safe to admininister aztreonam to patients allergic to penicillin.

61-2 Carbenicillin [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP16062-9 Carbenicillin
Carbenicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the carboxypenicillin subgroup of the penicillins. It has gram-negative coverage which includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa but limited gram-positive coverage. The carboxypenicillins are susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes. The antibiotic is very soluble in water and is acid-labile. Aqueous solutions are short-lived. Working concentration in the lab: up to 100 µg per ml. It is a semi-synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring penicillin. Although much more expensive than ampicillin, it is much more stable.

LP14176-9 Cefaclor
Cefaclor is a semisynthetic β-lactam antibiotic drug belonging to the cephalosporin subgroup. Like all β-lactams, cefaclor readily reacts with tissue proteins in vivo, thereby sensitizing susceptible individuals. The allergenic determinants (epitopes) of cephalosporins such as cefaclor are not fully known. This is a consequence of the unstable structures which are formed upon reaction with lysine amino groups in proteins. The primary unstable conjugates are rapidly degraded and transformed into structures where the six-membered dihydrothiazine ring is absent.
Immediate reactions (maximum 1 hour after drug intake) have the highest probability of being IgE-mediated. Clinical pictures typical for immediate reactions to β-lactams are urticaria, with or without angioedema, and anaphylaxis.

77-8 ceFAZolin [Susceptibility] by Disk diffusion (KB)
Part Descriptions
LP16066-0 ceFAZolin
Cefazolin, also known as cefazoline or cephazolin, is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic. The drug is usually administrated either by intramuscular injection (injection into a large muscle) or intravenous infusion (intravenous fluid into a vein). Cefazolin is mainly used to treat bacterial infections of the skin. It can also be used to treat moderately severe bacterial infections involving the lung, bone, joint, stomach, blood, heart valve, and urinary tract. It is effective only against infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci bacteria, organisms commonly found on normal human skin. Resistance to cefazolin is seen in several species of bacteria.
